Secure Video Conferencing: how reliable is it and are their programs for it?
How reliable is video conferencing when it comes to securing data transmitted via internet? Internet rules technology today. With its speed and benefit, it is no wonder firms, business entities, and individuals are taking gain of its cost effectiveness, flexibility and. Various features, products, software, programs, solutions, and services are being enhanced and innovated to meet everybody’s specifications and demand.
The avid internet users absolutely demand a full exposure to its capacity. With its continued increase of users and data placed on the net daily, is there a way to secure private data? Could you really rely on privacy policies especially when it comes to active social networks?
The need for security regarding data delivery over the web is advancing as data upon data that are meant to be private are placed over the net.
From business firms to law firms to medical institutes, providing security for their data has become the main concern. Providing end to end encryption of date and confirming an end users identity are needed to secure data transmitted. Adding to the security requirements, a wide range of internet services needs to transmit great amount of data. Encryption can develop into a performance problem as the bandwidth requirements increase.
Real Time Transport
To secure multiparty Videoconferencing, equipments and tools are being developed based on the RTP (standard Real time Transport). One project is called the VIC. In this project, to generate a functioning security test bed, the ability to choose cipher encryptions and the ability to begin one secure VIC session is a must. It is also necessary to include key exchange algorithms ciphers as VIC is using two valid IP Streams.
These streams are the data and control stream. The control system is used to exchange components. Data stream on the other hand is used for encryption components.
The VIC has a modified main menu that lets the recipient and the sender to start security at any given time during the conference. When activating the “initiate secure session,” a message will be sent to the unicast via VIC control channel.
The receiving party will then be asked if a secure conferencing is what they want. Should the user click on the yes, an option of ciphers is then sent to both users. The party requesting the conference will be alerted assuming the recipient chooses the no button.
For the source, the cipher they chose will be used to both encrypt the data and control channels. For the recipient on the other hand, the chipper they choose will encrypt the return control channel. Upon choosing a cipher, the secure session initiate button on the main menu is then changed to “Session is secured”.
SVC via Internet
However, secure video conference via internet has its own set of tests. For instance, when moving full motion images, the speed needed to move the image is almost 7Mbs that comes from the camera server going to the screen server. In addition, this has to pass from networks and computers before reaching its destination. The impracticality of the process calls for the video stream to be compressed.
Securing video conferencing is mainly balancing function and security features. Also, it often is just a matter of searching for the right information and following it.
