Understanding H323 Video Conferencing
By definition, H323 is a protocol for video conferencing through IP. This device allows efficient data processing. It was first published with the purpose of allowing videoconference services over a LAN (Local Area Network).
It was however used first as a way relaying voice messages through IP. H323 has been modified and improved to deliver superior quality for not only voice but video conference alike. H323 is also widely known as packet-based multimedia communication systems. In the year 2006, the newly published H323 edition was called H323v6.
An H323 feature has become a standard especially in the business world as it meets their communication needs by providing supplementary services.
How communication flow in H323 system
First, when a caller initiates a call, a gateway connects the call to the call recipient. The call then was set up and acknowledged. Endpoints will alert gatekeepers that they are in call. H323 also offers fast connect procedures and the call can be established with only a couple of messages. Release complete information is then sent by a device if the call is finished. Again, endpoints should alert the gatekeeper that the call is now done.
H323 was originally designed with the purpose of making videoconference over a LAN (Local Area Network) possible. It was however first used as a way of relaying voice communication over IP networks.
Its features have been modified through the years with the purpose of improving the quality and ability to provide superior video and voice conference. H323 has been so widely used by big carrier networks that by 1998, they changed H323 to packet-based multimedia communications systems. In 2006 however, h323’s newest edition was called H323v6.
Protocols
H323 system uses certain protocols as well. These protocols include RAS (H225) used to supply admission control service and address resolution. Another is H225 call signaling used to establish communication. Another is a control protocol communication via multimedia. This protocol includes procedures and messages to enable exchange and closing and opening channels for video and audio data. Another is the RTP, utilized for receiving and sending text, voice, and video information between and among parties involved.
H323 video conferencing has apparently gained renown from the moment it was brought out. Commonly, it is now used not only for two way videoconferencing but also for multipoint videoconferencing. This system characterizes different network essentials that work collectively in order to provide superior multimedia communication. These elements are called endpoints. It includes terminals which actually is the most basic element in H323 system. This terminal is also called protocol stack.
It implements the functionality of H323 system. It includes complete stack to support video and voice communication data. There are certain codecs included in H323. Video communication is enabled to decode and encode video in accordance to H261. The terminals of H323 are also enabled to encode and decode speech in accordance to G711.
Through the years the standard provided by VTC manufacturers in their traditional ISDN-based systems is the IP based videoconferencing. IP videoconferencing has become known as a widespread communications line and military and government organizations and businesses still make use of ISDN VTC and H320 in the main.
However, owing to the cost peak and rise of the Internet, particularly broadband, there has been a sudden surge of use and increase of IP VTC, H323. This particular system has the lead that it is available to anybody with a DSL or high speed Internet connection.
